Global Intelligence Services Implicated in Iran’s Recent Unrest

Iranian security and intelligence sources have disclosed details regarding what they describe as coordinated foreign intelligence operations aimed at amplifying recent civil disturbances across Iran. According to statements from Iranian officials and security-linked media outlets, intelligence services from numerous countries have been monitoring and allegedly intervening in Iran’s internal affairs.

Iran’s Intelligence Minister Esmaeil Khatib recently stated that intelligence agencies from 53 countries maintain dedicated “Iran desks” focused on the Islamic Republic. These services, according to Iranian officials, work collaboratively on what Tehran characterizes as counter-security projects targeting the country’s stability.

Recent protests in Iran have been accompanied by what security analysts describe as sophisticated information warfare campaigns. Intelligence findings suggest systematic use of artificial intelligence to generate fake videos, alongside the republishing of archival footage from previous years presented as current events. Paid platforms and rented social media pages, working alongside international media outlets, have allegedly amplified small-scale gatherings to portray them as nationwide uprisings.

Telegram messaging app has reportedly become the primary platform for organizing radical behaviors, with certain personalities playing prominent roles in directly inciting public opinion. Iranian authorities claim that suspicious phone calls originating from neighboring countries, disguised as “opinion polls,” began months before the recent unrest, aimed at creating a crisis atmosphere.

The Iranian government reports that 40 individuals in Tehran have been identified as key figures in spreading false information about the protests on social media platforms, particularly Instagram. These accounts have been removed and legal cases have been filed against the accused.

Former US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo’s recent statements have drawn attention, with Iranian media claiming he acknowledged Mossad’s direct role in directing provocative operations and supporting protest groups in Iran. This has fueled Iranian narratives about foreign interference in domestic affairs.

Iranian officials emphasize that while legitimate grievances exist within society, external actors are exploiting internal dissatisfaction to advance geopolitical objectives. The government insists that distinguishing between genuine protesters and those allegedly receiving foreign support remains a priority for security services.

The allegations come amid broader regional tensions, with Iran maintaining that hybrid warfare tactics combining military, economic, and psychological operations are being employed against the Islamic Republic by adversaries seeking regime change.

International human rights organizations have called for restraint and respect for peaceful protest rights, while Western governments have generally supported what they describe as legitimate expressions of popular discontent in Iran.
